Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine in Southern Maryland

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. It stimulates the body’s natural healing processes and restore balance to the flow of energy, or “qi.”

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?

Acupuncture balances the flow of qi through pathways known as meridians and stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissues, leading to pain relief and the release of endorphins.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

Acupuncture is safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. Pre-sterilized disposable needles and hygiene practices minimize the risk of infection.

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?

Acupuncture is commonly used for pain management, including back pain, migraines, and arthritis. It’s also used for a variety of other conditions such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, digestive issues, and infertility.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ACUPUNCTURE SESSON?

During a session, our doctor will insert thin needles into the acupuncture points. You might feel a slight prick or tingling sensation. The needles are usually left in place for around 15 to 30 minutes while you relax.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

Most people feel minimal to no pain during acupuncture. Sensations vary – you might feel a brief pinch or tingling when the needle is inserted. Any discomfort usually fades quickly.

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?

The number of sessions varies depending on the condition being treated. Some acute issues might require only a few sessions, while chronic conditions might require regular treatments over a longer period. Our doctor recommends a personalized treatment plan to address your specific needs and support your overall well-being.

IS ACUPUNCTURE COVERED BY INSURANCE?

We are out of network, so we highly encourage you to check with your own provider for your out-of-network benefits for acupuncture. We can provide you with a superbill which you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

ARE THERE ANY ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL ACUPUNCTURE?

There are variations like electroacupuncture (using electric currents through the needles), acupressure (pressure on acupuncture points without needles), and even laser acupuncture. These methods aim to achieve similar effects but might differ in their mechanisms and effectiveness.
